Veterans & Medicaid

 

VA health care and Medicaid can exist at the same time.

However, they serve different purposes, and eligibility is evaluated separately.

VA health care is based primarily on military service and VA eligibility rules.
Medicaid is a state program based on income, household situation, and, in some cases, assets.

Because of this:

• Having VA health care does not automatically qualify you for Medicaid

• Having Medicaid does not replace your VA health care

• You may use both, depending on the type of care and where it’s received

Some Veterans qualify for Medicaid to help with:

• Non-VA medical care

• Long-term care or nursing home coverage

• Home and community-based services

• Costs that VA coverage may not fully address

Since each program follows its own rules, it’s important to understand how coverage coordinates before enrolling — especially to avoid confusion about billing, access to providers, and benefits.
