How to Enroll in Medicare Part B
Medicare Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, lab work, and medical equipment.
Step 1: Go to the Medicare Part B Enrollment Website
https://ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up/part-b-only
This is the official Social Security website used to enroll in Medicare Part B.
Step 2: What to Do on the Website
Once on the site:
• Click "Get Started" under "Sign up for Part B only"
• Log in or create a my Social Security account
• Complete the Part B application (Form CMS-40B)
• Complete and submit your application
Important:
If you are enrolling late or leaving employer coverage, you may need Form CMS-40B.
Documents You Will Need
Have these ready before applying:
• Medicare Part A information (if already enrolled)
• Social Security number
• Proof of employment or employer health coverage (if applicable)
• Form CMS-40B (if enrolling outside your Initial Enrollment Period)
Important: Part B has specific enrollment periods. You can sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period (around your 65th birthday), the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31), or a Special Enrollment Period if you're leaving employer coverage (generally an 8-month window). Signing up late without qualifying coverage may result in a lifelong late enrollment penalty.

• Standard Monthly Premium: $202.90 (most people pay this amount)
Actual costs may be higher if IRMAA (income-related adjustment) applies.
